I imagine USB 2 cables come with the "USB Hi-speed" logo in the
moulding or on a sticky label. Severin, by going to Apple Menu > About
This Mac > More Info > USB, you can find out whether each device is
connected at USB 1 ("Up to 12 Mb/sec") or USB 2 ("HIgh-speed Up to 480
Mb/sec"). Your USB 1 cable may actually be good enough to support the
USB 2 protocol and good speeds already, so that may explain why you
have not experienced any perceptible degradation in performance.
