Thanks for all the suggestions to fix the problem of hundreds of 
attachments dropped onto the desktop.

I went armed with all your suggestions to find that my mate had been 
successful in dragging all of them in small groups  very very slowly to 
the trash.

The iMac is now running like a Buick; smooth and fast.
