Hello Paul,

You're not ignorant and you're not doing anything wrong.

This unusual error indicates Mac OS X has let you down by refusing to do what is supposed to be nearly automatic or at least giving you an comprehensible error message if that is not possible.

A reboot might help with problems like this. It also could be that the DMG file is corrupted or incomplete and dwnloading again might help.

But, if you've done those things and the problem persists, you will have other options. Do you still need more help?
