xcode update 2.0 - 2.2

Howdy
Xcode 2.O came with my Tiger Disks, 2.2. is evidently now out, is an 
upgrade publically available.
I have have noticed that 2.2 is 870 MB download! and requires 
subscription to the developer network.

any suggestions

I am sort of trying to teach myself this stuff, as I have a couple of 
ideas I would like to try.
