Alpha software another words the first test release although you might find it stable enough to use it does have issues. Java libraries loading although this I am not 100% sure, but over time one would expect it to improve.

I also believe a lot of the effort which is vary minimal as it is done by volunteers is aimed towards Intel based macs at the moment.

Eventually it will improve, but eventually could be a way off as developers are working in their own time-frame. And to be honest apparently the Mac developers of Office for OS X is one of the few things M$ has done well. So, if it is needed for specific work orientated hence dollar based it could be better to just purchase or accept a few seconds waiting and probably some time acclimatising one self and computer to sync with efforts of GNU community. Even better help them develop product at a faster pace so you and others can enjoy the effort.

But saying all that OpenOffice which NeoOffice is based runs relatively slow at start up due to X11 loading, but once loaded I find both reasonably functional without too much overhead. Although I have never used M$ Office within OSX. I suppose I have no comparison except to say that these products when I do use mainly for opening specific file formats from Office, work. There is also some situations where even office will not open it's own format so, I attempt with these programs normally successfully as posted before, and language translation works a treat.

One also has to look into why OO was developed. Creating an M$ Office type suite within an Unix/Linux environment and relatively at a bargain basement price something M$ will never do. NeoOffice was developed using Java to make it more OS X compatible within an Aqua desktop instead of being locked into an X11 window.

There are other GNU licensed bargain basement software unfortunately not in an Office suite. Abiword for word processing, Gnumeric for a spreadsheet, MySQL or PostgreSql for a Database, and the best letter or document printing software - Lyx and many more. But, as with others of this genre maybe not so polished for Aqua and Unix specific GNU ways of operating and some do have a learning curve. Like LyX it is a front end for LaTex which is an interpreter for Tex but it typesets pages to perfection with minimal input from author. There is some setting up to do and reading of tutorial documents to get the gist of how it does it's magic. But once running you will find it hard not to write all your correspondence with it and wonder why I was not using it sooner.

Cheers!

Hi Folks,

Can anyone offer any explanation as to why Neo Office is clunky and slow on the Mac? (OS 10.3.9 on two seperate machines)
