Its not a problem as I rarely keep my sent mail, but it is
irritating me as it shouldn't happen.

Hi Robin,
Try the following.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
Deselect "Enable junk mail filtering".
Quit and re-launch the Mail.app.
Reselect "Enable junk mail filtering".
