The Apple menu on Classical macs could be used for listing the files
commonly used, but apparently no longer. On the other hand the Dock
isn't very good for this.
I keep folders from networked computers on the my Dock. This seems the
easiest way to mount and open a remote folder; one click.
Holding down a click or right clicking a folder in the dock will produce
a list of that folders contents.
Given that the folders could contain almost anything, the customisation
potential is only limited by your imagination.
Icons on the desktop could be used but they don't line up on the left
hand, like Windows one do. Is there any way of either using the Apple
menu for files, or of lining up icons on the left side of the Desktop
(or even better to view them as Lists?
Icons on the Desktop can be told to sort in various ways by going to the
View Menu and choosing 'Show View Options', deselect 'Keep Arranged
By..' and you can place the icons anywhere on the Desktop.
One bit of advice, I too began by using Windows and tried at first to
continue using Windows-borne practices. Despite having studied IT, I do
believe Apple has much better ideas about the UI than me ;-)
I think they usually know better and that its no defeat to do it their
way, isn't that why we pay them so well?
Good luck
