smart folders rock!
what they are not is a folder - what they are is a saved search
criteria masquerading as a folder and every time you re open that
"folder" it shows you an updated search result. the files you see are
just symbolic links (like an alias) rather than a new copy of the
file)
so for a specific example:
all my photo's have tags like "Perth" "Swan River" "Family" "Japan"
etc and of course the camera model and exposure settings.
So I could have a smart folder called, say, "Kyoto images" any photo
I have that I (or other downloaded images) tagged with "Kyoto" will
appear in it as the smart folder search criteria is File Type -
Image, Key word - Kyoto.
when some one I met up with there sends me some of their photo's I
can tag them in iPhoto or Lightroom (or even just manually type it
in to the file's "get info/keywords") that file will now be found
when I open that smart folder.
I could even drill down further and (using the "others" feature) save
a smart folder for all images from Kyoto taken where the flash fired
but using "daylight" colour balance.
pretty powerful stuff eh
(yes OK in this example I could, possibly, use light room or iPhoto
except I don't keep all my images in one library (most are not even
kept in a library) or even on one hard disk)
Hi Everyone
I'm still trying to get my head around the "extras' available with OSX,
having recently converted from OS9 so can someone please explain to me, in
basic terms, what a smart folder is used for? And does a smart folder become
a duplicate of another 'normal' folder? (hope not!)
