Hi, I'm rather drawn to the new ultralite notebooks, Toshiba have a new one (not available in Australia yet) with Core 2 Duo. This seems to be a trend that Apple are avoiding, so if choosing between a Macbook and a MacBook Pro, one of my criteria would be the weight. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of difference between them (2.36 and 2.54kgs). The Macs do have the advantage of a small and light power block, but I gather other manufacturers are getting wise to this as well, at least with regard to the weight.

Weight really becomes an issue when your job is very mobile, or when travelling. At the same time, you don't really want to compromise on specs.

The other issue is that 2 gig of RAM is not really enough for processing video, even the ordinary DV tapes that I use. Well, you can process the video, but need to have another computer to work on whilst its processing. As Daniel was saying at the meeting, the 2gig sticks which you can put into the MacBook Pro, along with 1gig to make 3gig in total, are extremely expensive at this stage.

Perhaps the power of the new MacBook Pros is such that I could encode video, watch TV, and do other work at the same time, even with 2gig of RAM. Does anyone have experience of doing this?

cheers, Susan.

Which poses a question,.

On the surface it makes these new models very attractive with the Core2 Duo
now in the MacBook.
I would have thought they would have waited a little while to sell some more
MacBook Pro's before putting C2D into the MacBook.

I would think, and this is where the question comes in, that from a
"consumer" point of view doesn't it make it hard for them to work out what
they are getting for their extra $1000 (roughly)?

Yes, I know the MacBook Pro has dedicated 128MB video and the MacBook has shared video and the screen size is bigger, etc etc but I'm sure when some customers are just "looking" at the specs I'm sure they'll wonder what the
difference is in price for the features they get.

And I'm sure this could start a big flame war, but I'd be curious on what
people think....

Kind Regards
Daniel

Well spotted Susan. Nice new Core 2 Duo MacBooks with 6x dual layer DVD
burner on the 2GHz model and option of the 200GB HD as well.

Apple's saying the 2GHz Core 2 Duo model is up to 25% faster than the
earlier 2GHz Core Duo beastie thanks to the 4MB cache and 64bit CPU.

That's one sweet little machine. :-)
