Actually, if you use networked calendars like Entourage (and to a lesser extent Apple iCal) with Exchange, the more one looks into this, the more this whole situation is perhaps not as simple to understand or fix as any of us could have imagined.
If you have Entourage on your Mac and use the calendering particularly in an organisation that shares calendars via Exchange, it looks like it might be a case of damned if you do (change time zones) and damned if you don't. The 2 options are on December 3rd: 1. Manually advance clock 1 hr but stay in GMT +8.0 time zone by just changing your clock or using a Network Time Server that is manually advanced 1hr on Dec 3rd. OR 2. Change your Timezone to ³Osaka Japan² in your Date & Time System Preference which puts you in the GMT +9.0 time zone. NOTE: GMT = Greenwich Mean Time --------------------------------------------------------------- Manually advance clock 1 hr but stay in GMT +8.0 time zone implications: --------------------------------------------------------------- I think this is what appears to happen if you stay in the old Perth GMT +8.0 time zone after DST starts by either manually advancing your clock 1hr or using a time server that has been manually advanced 1hr: Pros: - Your existing past and existing future appointments stay at the correct times - New appointments from others who are also still set to the old Perth GMT +8.0 time zone appear correctly in your diary Cons: - New appointments from others who have changed to GMT +9.0 by choosing Osaka Japan as their time zone would appear incorrectly an hour early in your calendar. - I am assuming that new appointments from Windows users who apply Microsoft's daylight savings patch to Windows XP will also appear an hour early in your calendar as they will be in the GMT +9.0 timezone. - If/when Apple releases a patch to OS X after the daylight savings period has started (to correct our time zone info and put us in the GMT +9.0 zone) I think all of your old appointments would be pushed an hour later in your calendar. --------------------------------------------------------------- Change time zone to GMT +9.0 implications: --------------------------------------------------------------- If you do change your time zone to GMT +9.0 by selecting Osaka Japan or hacking your tzdata file: Pros: - New appointments from others who have changed to GMT +9.0 by choosing Osaka Japan as their time zone should appear correctly in your calendar. - I am assuming that new appointments from Windows users who apply Microsoft's daylight savings patch to Windows XP/Outlook will also appear correctly. - If/when Apple releases a patch to OS X after the daylight savings period has started, all of your appointments that display correctly in GMT +9.0 would appear correctly when you change your location back to Perth as the time zone would stay the same. Cons: - All of your pre-DST existing appointments will be incorrectly pushed forward an hour as they are converted to GMT +9.0. - You will either have to manually correct the times of all of your existing appointments or export the lot, change your time zone and re-import and thus apparently lose the links between any recurring appointments. - new appointments from anyone who has stayed in the old Perth GMT +8.0 time zone and just manually advanced their time an hour will incorrectly appear an hour later in your calendar. Nasty. :-( --------------------------------------------------------------- Apple iCal implications: --------------------------------------------------------------- If you have Apple's iCal, it looks like it handles it better initially in that even if you change the time zone of your Mac to Osaka Japan GMT +9.0, you have the option in iCal to display all of your current appointments in the old GMT 8.0+ and the old appointments will move back to the correct time. However, I think that even here you will have problems with the following occurring: - New appointments from others who have changed to GMT +9.0 by choosing Osaka Japan as their time zone would appear incorrectly an hour early in your calendar. - I am assuming that new appointments from Windows users who apply Microsoft's daylight savings patch to Windows XP will also appear an hour early in your calendar as they will be in the GMT +9.0 timezone. - If/when Apple releases a patch to OS X after the daylight savings period has started (to correct our time zone info and put us in the GMT +9.0 zone) I think all of your old appointments would be pushed an hour later in your calendar. As such, the best advice making the rounds is to print out your current calendar and any new invites, make sure you include the time in the invite. Please feel free to add your comments and suggestions to this dialog. I haven't had enough time to do thorough testing myself, so I'd appreciate others confirming or correcting this analysis.
