Hi Aurora,
Try Relaunching Finder.
Command (Apple Key) / Option/ escape and then Relaunch Finder.
Or Apple Menu > Force Quit to bring up the Menu Box that will give
you the Relaunch Finder option.
Check also if you have more than one Word application installed.
If you still have generic icons showing on your desktop try deleting
these three files:
user/library/preferences:
LSApplications
LSClaimtedTypes
LSSchemes
Then restart your computer and these files will rebuild themselves.
