I have finally got it to work again. I trashed everything concerned with SMS Mac and reinstalled the widget.
I then found I had to quit the widget from the screen and reopen from the Dashboard and enter the number in total eg, +61407 etc and it came through properly. Previously I was just adjusting the number from the widget on the screen without quitting and re-opening. Hope this makes sense. I tried the Mobik too. It worked well and is free.
