Congratulations in getting the DVD out.

To answer your question, there are 2 other ways I use to find out which apps
are running:

1. Pressing 'Command' & 'Tab' keys will show all the running application
icons
2. Going to 'Apple' -> 'Force Quit' will list all the running apps.
