Brett,

Google AdWords are very effective for a lot of businesses, no doubt about that at all. But like most things, what you might get out of it depends.

The mechanics are straightforward. Open a Google AdWords account (free). You then setup a campaign, along with keywords and your bid (s) and your ads. Provide your credit card number, and activate your campaign.

With AdWords, you don't pay for impressions (ie. the number of times your ad is shown), but for click throughs (ie. the number of times someone clicks on your ad). The amount you pay per click depends on how competitive the keyword is, your bid and several other factors. We have clients who pay between 20c and 25c per click, and others between 60 and 80c per click. Very competitive keywords cost a lot more. You can set a daily budget to avoid getting a bill that might be larger than you expect.

While this all sounds quite simple (and is), how effective your AdWords campaigns are can very greatly, depending on how you set them up. You'll also want to consider registering for a free Google Analytics account so you can see what is going on on your website in more detail. And learning how to setup to track conversions (not just click throughs).

If you are going to invest in AdWords, you will inevitably come across a few key concepts:
- keyword research, to get better at choosing the right keywords
- ad effectiveness, to improve your click through rate and get better traffic - landing pages and conversion, to get better conversion from your traffic

No point paying for ads if you can't convert to whatever you want.

There is a lot of education available out on the Web. But its also relatively inexpensive to try it out for yourself and see what works.

Good luck with it

Glenn.

Has anyone tried Google Ads for their business? How does one initiate such a thing? It wasn't overly clear from the site.

Also do you think they work?
