I believe the 10.4.9 system update introduced a delay on the eject key as a "feature"

I have now discovered that for the keyboard eject key to work it must be held down. I do not recall having to do this in the past, so now I don't know if this is a memory lapse on my part (personal RAM deterioration) or if the sensitivity of that key has altered.
