Hi Stewart, If you had low disk space when the file was modified or copied, indexing may have been in deferral mode (and possibly never happened? I'm not sure). Otherwise, I'm not sure.
Some people set their Spotlight preferences so that certain items are excluded, but I guess that is not your situation. Do you have Fast User Switching enabled? Once heard of someone who "couldn't find a file" with Spotlight, but then found it in a folder, and then "it appeared" in Spotlight. This was while logged into to a second account using Fast User Switching.
