Hello Mac People,
A interesting article on Macworld Mac Gems for compressing files.
Especially for people who frequently file-exchange with users of
computers other than Macs.
At $10US a handy little tool.
"Compress Files 1.0
The only time many Mac users compress files these days is to give
them to other people; for example to send via email or to upload to a
server. If you do most of your file-exchanging with users of other
computing platforms, however, the most common ways of compressing
files on a Mac -- the Finder's Create Archive command and Allume's
StuffIt -- preserve Mac resource forks, .DS_Store files, and other
invisible data that's unusable by other operating systems. As a
result, when a non-Mac-using recipient uncompresses your archive, the
legitimate files will be accompanied by a good deal of virtual litter.
Apimac's Compress Files is a handy tool for those who frequently file-
exchange with users of computers other than Macs. In addition to
providing a dead-simple way to compress files in one of multiple
formats, it's also the easiest way I've found to automatically remove
this extraneous data when compressing files to be sent to Windows,
Unix, and Linux users. (Another bonus: the resulting archives will
also be smaller.) Compress Files also provides handy options for
creating Mac OS X disk images, as well as for creating archives --
for example, for backup purposes -- with all Mac-specific data
preserved. "
