OK thanks folks I've got a few suggestions and a few offers of help...
Rob's pointed me to a macintouch page were people got this card to work under 10.x by trashing its .kext file. (fortunately the card has the later rom chip rev needed)
I'll give it a bash this weekend and if this fails maybe follow up on offers to help later next week.
