Hi All I've been following this, and for me I feel I can comment on both sides of the fence, seeing as I started coming along to the meetings, and am now on the committee. For me, I am finding it more and more difficult to make meetings with the pressure of running my own consulting business and the many long hours I work, mixed with other factors as well. With this every second week Tuesday night for a WAMUG committee meeting or the WAMUG meeting itself, I don't get a lot of free time. So I was also looking at standing down next year when Matt does as well. Add to this the "trouble" that we sometimes face of finding content or things to show off at the monthly meetings, and sit there scratching our head to think of new and exciting demo's to do, makes it quite difficult.
The WAMUG mailing list is a fantastic source of information and help, and I feel this is more than an asset to WA (and the world), so we always see a lot of information, advice. This, I feel will carry on regardless. >From the point of the meetings, if they did "fall by the way side", perhaps we could look at something of a more "informal" meeting, or "get togethers". If there were occasions or a need to demo things, eg, the up and coming Leopard, new features, what they are, what they will do, improvements etc, then we could have a meeting/get together for this. We could have the meetings in either the same location, or the Futuresphere (with a donation or something similar if we had to pay for all of it.). So perhaps not monthly meetings, quarterly, or something similar depending on "the event". Ill stop rambling now, as I know I could say more, but I think that covers what I'm trying to get across. Oh, and for interest, here is something similar from one of our members Ian Bacon, who sent me this info about the Cambodian MUG, so it might be of interested, or something similar to what we're looking at/thinking of. There is a small, but earnest group of Mac users in Cambodia. As you can imagine, in a poor 3rd world country, most computers are old, sometimes very old win machines. The only sign of new computers I have seen are in the better 'western' hotels, and in the hands of expats and tourists. While the hotels use win exclusively, many tourists carry Macs. In addition there are a small number of the semi- permanent westerns living in Cambo, AND, these people have formed a Mac User Group! I scheduled my sojourn in Phnom Penh to coincide with the June meeting of the group (it meets semi-regularly). The meeting was held at 'Tony's Bar', a small, but well known watering hole, and one which is immediately across from a wireless internet provider. There are approximately 40 people on the email list, but maybe 6 to 10 people regularly attend meetings (people come and go in the 3rd world). Meetings are informal, there is no agenda or formal activities. People sit around tables, chit chat, exchange hints, discuss a little ancillary business, and move on when they feel inclined. The group was varied. One us guy has women and monetary problems 'back home', but he is also a lawyer, so he has a biz providing visa assistance to Cambodians who wish to travel to the us. Another is a retired micro-biologist who works as an unpaid consultant to the C gov.
