No knowing much about these things, can I use the $99 Maxtor on my iMac
(table lamp) USB1 machine to back up data?
My short answer is yes. Albeit slowly.
I would only recommend it for personal files though, backing up the
system is serious work and as others have mentioned Firewire drives are
the best.
If so what software should I use to do the back up?
Software would not be required, just drag and drop folders and/or files
into the drive.
Software *is* recommended if you were to back up the system.
Finally, I think it is too small. Good price though.
You can judge for yourself by finding out the size of some things you
would like to back up, you should also consider having more than one
copy of these back ups on the drive.
