Thank you for your reply. It has made me look a little further but
in doing so I reached of point of confusion.
Spyder 2 Pro seems to be a device that would meet my needs but some
suppliers show it as being for 10.3 and above and another for 10.2.8
and above. Can anyone say from experience which is correct? I am
running 10.2.8!!

Reading the linked page it seems you need a spectrophotometer
to go with the software, in this case recommended from
GretagMacbeth, they are good. Alternatives are the Optical Spyder
and I am currently using a Huey from Pantone with which I am very
happy and which is relatively inexpensive and extremely convenient.
Whatever you use, it requires a device that goes on to the face of
the monitor and reads the actual colours generated by the software.
The software then generates a profile so that the colours produced
match the numbers stimulating them. The same principle is used in
generating profiles for printers and scanners but much more time
consuming!
Huey has an added nice feature of compensating on the fly for
changes in room lighting which in my case can be extreme and reminds
me two weekly to recalibrate, which takes only a couple of minutes.
Good monitor calibration and printer profiling are both vital if you
are doing any artwork that requires accurate colour management.
