Hi John,
In Pixelmator v1.0.2 (which is latest). As James suggested, first
export your image from iphoto to your desktop.
Open Pixelmator and go to File > Open - navigate to your exported
image on the desktop, or if you have ticked to show the Welcome to
Pixelmator screen on startup, click 'Open Existing Image' and locate
your image on the desktop.
You will not be able to save without a Pixelmator watermark unless you
License the application.

under help you can find a pdf based guide with lots of info
if you see only a part of the pic.... go to image & zoom out untill
you see the whole pic
you can try as well
layer/extras/ expand-condense
to crop
select the retangle or circle tool on top of toolbar then swipe over
the area you want to cut out (the not selected part gets darker (if
the selected part is wrong just do the swipe again)
with copy or cut you get the cropped pic into the clipboard
then go the file/new from past board
and there is the cropped pic visible/ready for more work
