Hi all, I have a wireless network set-up using a billion ADSL router (model VoIP/802.11g ADSL2+ Firewall Router). I don't currently use the wireless as my wireless-equiped G5 iMac is sat right next to the router - so I just use the ethernet connection. However, I have tested the set-up and I could connect wirelessly with no problem (this machine is running Tiger).
I also have my old G4 800 MHz iMac and a G4 400 MHz Ti powerbook neither of which is fitted with an airport card and both of which are running Jaguar. My other half currently uses the powerbook in her room and comes into my office to use the old G4 iMac if she wants to access the internet (via the ethernet connection). We are thinking of moving the G4 imac into her room but an ethernet connection is not then practical, so I am considering wireless options. It would also be nice to have the laptop wireless enabled. I know that I could fit an airport card to both the G4 iMac and the powerbook but, since we are not likely to want to connect the iMac and powerbook simultaneously, I am looking at getting a Wireless USB adaptor which I could set up at the G4 iMac but "borrow" if I wanted to take the laptop out to the garden! (Also, I expect that this would have a better range than airport cards and we have thick brick and granite walls!) Now both the old machines were pre-Airport Extreme and only take the original 802.11b Airport cards - but am I correct in believing that they will work with faster 802.11g USB adaptors (the router supports 802.11b/g). What I'm looking for is some feedback on various makes/models of adaptor - ie any that are being successfully used and/or are recommended and any to be avoided or are known to have problems with OSX. ( I know a good rule of thumb is to use the same manufacturer for router/adaptor - but billion just seem to do the router end). Also will I need to source specific drivers or will they work with the OSX built-in drivers. TIA Cheers Neil -- Neil R.
