Have you considered an ethernet over powerline adaptor? There are a few available, and a number of configuration options including a wireless access point. The simplest is an ethernet to ethernet plug pair which you can extend to wherever you have a power point (or an extension cord!). Just add more modules to go to another room. I managed to set one up in about ten minutes, and it saved me having to crawl through the ceiling with another cat 5 cable! This may save you the vagaries of wireless, and the need to go and get the USB adaptor every time you need it. Murphy's law states it will always be plugged into the OTHER computer when you need it.
