I been happily storing iTunes music on an external HD attached to an old

Cheers, Paul.

Well, you can simply keep on using the external HD. Simply hold down the Option key when you first launch iTunes on your new computer and choose the iTunes folder on the HD.

If you really want to bring the music back to your internal HD, you should be able simply to copy the iTunes folder from the extenal HD to the Music folder in your Home folder and relaunch iTunes.
