a couple of days ago I had the BOM Archive Helper (the built in
ZIP/UnZIP) hang on me.
After doing a force quit (from activity manager as BOM doesn't appear
in the standard opt+com+esc window) the process disappeared but was
replaced by a process called "ditto"
since then when ever I try to unzip a file (or files) I get a hung
process called "ditto" (or multiples for multiple file unzipping) in
activity manager even if the unzip was successful. They actually hog
the processor quite a lot (as if they were still unzipping the file
and just 4 of these will slow my dual processor 2Ghz G5 down to a
dead slow crawl
in activity monitor I can't quit the process (the quit option is
unavailable/grayed out but can I use "kill" command terminal (but
only using the -9 option)
I've deleted it's preference setting file and done a repair
permissions without any joy.
is it possible to just replace this utility from another MAC running
10.4 (location is /System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchiveHelper.app).
the only other mac I have at home is currently running leopard which
has a different, incompatible, version so I'd have to go in to work
to copy it off.
