It seems likely that my address has been harvested.
Quote from wikipedia:
Another common method is the use of special software known as
"harvesting bots" or "harvesters", which spider Web pages, postings
on Usenet, mailing list archives, and other online sources to
obtain e-mail addresses from public data.
Spammers may also use a form of dictionary attack in order to
harvest e-mail addresses, known as a directory harvest attack,
where valid e-mail addresses at a specific domain are found by
brute force guessing e-mail address using common usernames in email
addresses at that domain. For example, trying [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], etc and any that are
accepted for delivery by the recipient email server, instead of
rejected, are added to the list of theoretically valid e-mail
addresses for that domain.
The best remedy that I have so far received is to change my email
address.
Any less draconian suggestions? Or will it just go away :-)

HI,
This is Russian spam. My pal, a Professor of lingusitics, tells me
it's an ad promoting professional development activities, in
Russian, but the activity is in Kiev in Ukraine.
It looks like it has bounced from a East European server. Why?
Perhaps a nasty macro has used your address to send it on as some
do (using your address book)? Perhaps the Ukrainian approach to
spam (make it look like it is a credible mail that bounced from you)?

I am being besieged by letters like the following. They are all

been particularly helpful so far.
Any explanations or suggestions?
