Thanks Ronda. I didn't know about that feature, but it didn't do the trick. However I have now tracked down the cause of my problem. It comes from the folder "Other items" in the "Autofill" section of "Preferences." Delete the annoying URLs or all of them and the problem is solved. As you would probably know, there's a checkbox to disable the function completely.
