I'm not sure whether this is a related issue, but I did an upgrade of Leopard Server to 10.5.3 on Friday, and then could not log in with any known user name/password combination! I booted off the Install DVD and used the password reset utility with no success. I then tried it again, and assigned a new password for the root user, and was able to log on that way.

Cheers,

Andrew

Thanks Rob and all.

Tried that Rob and the permissions repair did find a problem but still no joy. Taking a step back, the 2 initial attempts to upgrade the installation failed which left me nowhere so the upgrade was done in Target mode via my G5 iMac, I have tried every combination of user name and password belonging to the PowerBookPro and the iMac--on the off chance that the installation process had adopted the iMac KeyChain, all to no avail.

All files on the PowerBookPro is accessible in Target mode. I am thinking that transferring all the files to another disk and having another shot at running the Installer is the next option.

Adrian

Morning,

If your machine boots with the 10.5 install disk,

go to utilities choose reset password.

Select User name.

Enter new password then verify in box below, save.

Do not use reset.

Yes you will get a message about keychains, but it is about keychains password that wont be changing.

Oh, once you click on ok in keychains message box, there will be nothing in reset password box.
Do not despair it has changed the password.

Reboot using new password for user.

Cheers!
Rob

I have upgraded G4 Powerbook to OS 10.5 but it wont allow me to log on using the original user name and password. Booting on the Installer disk and using the Change Password utility wont change the password it comes up with a prompt saying that original password wont be unlocked and to use Key Chain to change it, the problem being that you cant log in to do anything.

Any suggestions please.

Hello Adrian,

Did you select the user name of your original administrator account, not "System Administrator Account"?

Cheers,
Ronni
