Hi Paul, if you are thinking of High Definition, so long as you have:

an Intel Mac
iLife 08

You no longer need firewire if you have an Intel Mac and iLife 08.

Most camcorders are compatible with iMovie 08 using USB to get the footage uploaded. They all have ways of linking directly to TVs - although you will have to buy an extra cable if you want High Definition footage on a High Definition TV. The salesperson will oblige!

DVD based camcorders would need an external DVD player/recorder as you cannot put the small disks into the slot drive of Macs. Or, use the USB cable to get the footage onto your Mac. Otherwise, the footage is compatible with iMovie 08.

JVC have their own format for recording and only supply a Windows solution. There's a way around this, but its more complicated. Susan's advice, skip JVC.

Best options are tape, SD card or hard disk based camcorders - Panasonic, Canon, or Sony - lots of choices. I don't think anyway can say what the best option is as new models come out all the time, with extras and improvements. If its just for family videos, then its a matter of what you can afford.

cheers, Susan.

One of our kids is thinking camcorder. I've suggested HD digital is
the way to go. One that will talk to a Mac. Any input would be
appreciated.

Cheers, Paul.
