Although it is no longer completely correct to say that there are no
viruses or malware for Mac OS X, the stuff that does exist is
extremely rare and invariably requires conscious activity on the part
of the user to allow it to be installed if you do encounter it. As
such, none of this stuff can claim to be a true "virus". You also
generally have do visit specific websites and/or download specific
files even to encounter it.
Is it sensible to use anti spyware software on a Mac? You'll have to
make your own mind up on this one, but for me the answer at this stage
is No. All it serves to do is take up valuable processor cycles in a
fruitless search for something that doesn't exist in any practical way.
The only exception to all of this is the accursed Microsoft Office
macro virus. These things CAN attack MS Office documents on the Mac,
and they are probably the single thing that would justify running anti
virus software on a Mac. However, if you are not a heavy user of
Office, or if you are, make sure that you NEVER allow Macros to run
( advisable on Windows as well - in fact much more so), then even they
will not be a problem.
If Office viruses do cause you concern, you might like to install
something like Intego Virusbarrier and run it occasionally. You just
need to keep it going in the background.
