Let us know how you go Ken. The iPhone 3G can certainly be jailbroken
to work with another service povider, but that doesn't help if you
can't buy it without the 2 year AT&T contract in the first place. I'll
be interested to hear if it is possible and how much more you would
have to pay as a result. :-)
I personally find the GPS, the non-recessed headphone jack, the better
reception of the plastic back and the 3G speeds of the iPhone 3G so
valuable that I wouldn't want to buy the old 2G iPhone in the USA or
back here in Oz even though you can obviously get that model second
hand without a contract.

3G now as well. I had to download LibertyX to sync with my
Macbook. I am running firmware 1.1.4 as I have not been game to
update since it is running so flawlessly as is, but because of this
I cannot download Apps from the Itunes store. This is no biggy as
there are thousands of native Apps available and so far have been
able to find the exact App or another one that does the same
thing. Otherwise I have had no problems with the Iphone. So, Ken
you can either buy a 2G Iphone on US EBAY which what I did or take
your chances with a new 3G, which is what I intend do on my next
trip to the US.
