Talking Firewire 800 & 400 I recenty picked up two Vantec NexStar MX dual bay drives with 2 x FW800, 1 x FW400 and 1 x USB.
Having a 27" iMac with one FW800 port and wanting to connect by FW to an old PowerBook G4 with only FW400 I thought I may be needing a FW800->400 cable. Apparently not. Connected the iMac by FW800 to one of the drives, then the drive by FW400 (6->6pin) to the PowerBook. Boot into Target Disk mode and it shows up on the iMac :) The benefit of connections that support daisy chaining...
