That machine should accept both a CD-RW or a Combo (DVD-Read/CD-RW)
internally (well, one at a time ;)
How often do you need the machine to read CDs?
You may be better off looking at an external burner either a USB drive
(although I recall that generation was only USB 1.1) or a Firewire
drive... this way the drive can always be used on other machines.
OR you may be better off buying a complete iBook... an iBook G4 can
picked up for around $150 mark these days on eBay... and you'll get
some other benefits (support for Airport Extreme cards, USB2, larger
HD, often more memory, and you can run Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on later
models)... also first gen MacBooks are around the $500 mark.
And finally, don't forget you can always use Target Disc mode to use
the Optical drive off another machine - insert the CD into the drive
of the "other" machine. Reboot that machine and hold down the T key
until you see the bouncing Firewire logo. Then plug a firewire cable
into that machine and into the iBook... the iBook should now see the
hard drive(s) and the CD from the other machine
