Thank you to James, Ronni, Daniel and Rob for your considered advice.

The ideal would be for me to get a Belkin UPS with sufficient oomph to keep my computer powered until it can shut down gracefully. My budget, stretched to the limit because of the iMac purchase, would suggest a Dick Smith surge board with $75,000 warranty, priced on special at $40.

The likely result would be the Dick Smith board initially and upgrading to a Belkin UPS when finances permit. I can then use the DS board for peripherals, such as the laser printer. I'll contact you then Daniel.
