iPhoto's Basic Slideshows are easy to create, but they have design limitations.
For total control over a slideshow's presentation, you need to create a Saved
Slideshow.
In "Create A Visually Impressive Saved Slideshow In iPhoto’09" I explain how to
create a saved slideshow and how to setup the slideshow settings, configure
slideshow settings, configure the Ken Burns effect, and export your Slideshow.
I explain my preferred Export settings for achieving the Highest Quality DVD of
your Slideshow, which is using Compression Type: Apple Intermediate Codec.
You might find other export settings work better for you.
Below are the experiments I carried out. My findings were: Both resulted in
smooth video & Audio playback & high quality DVD, but I felt the AIC was
slightly better quality than DV-PAL. Possibly because the dimensions were AIC
1064 x 800 pixels versus the DV-PAL size of 768 x 576 pixels.
iPhoto'09-Experiments - Exporting Saved Slideshows for creating the Highest
quality DVD in iDVD.
1st. Experiment:
Export to Quicktime Movie - Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)
1. Click Export and UNCHECK 'Automatically send slideshow to iTunes'
2. Click Custom Export and choose 'Movie to Quicktime Movie
3. Click Options to Open Movie Settings Dialogue Window. UNCHECK 'Prepare for
Internet Streaming'
4. Video: Click Settings: Compression Type: Apple Intermediate Codec,
Frame Rate: 25 fps, Compressor: Other - leave Interlaced (Default)
unchecked.
5. Click OK
6. Sound: Click Settings: Compressor: None, Rate: 48,000 kHz, Size: 16 bit,
Use: Stereo
7. Click OK
(No tick in 'Prepare for Internet Streaming')
8. Click OK
9. Click Save
iPhoto cannot be used while the Slideshow is Exporting
2nd. Experiment:
Export to Quicktime Movie - DV-PAL
1. Click Export and UNCHECK 'Automatically send slideshow to iTunes'
2. Click Custom Export and choose 'Movie to Quicktime Movie'
3. Click Options to Open Movie Settings Dialogue Window. UNCHECK 'Prepare for
Internet Streaming'
4. Video: Click Settings: Compression Type: DV-PAL,
Frame Rate: 25 fps, Compressor: Quality - BEST
Scan Mode: Interlaced
Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (which is what iPhoto uses)
5. Click OK
6. Sound: Click Settings: Compressor: None, Rate: 48,000 kHz, Size: 16 bit,
Use: Stereo
7. Click OK
(No tick in 'Prepare for Internet Streaming')
8. Click OK
9. Click Save
iPhoto cannot be used while the Slideshow is Exporting
