Hi Graeme, Be aware you won't be able to boot from eSATA external drive. You haven't given us the details of your iMac, but I don't know of any iMac that has a eSATA Port. I 'think' only certain G5 machines are bootable from eSATA drives, and only if the interface card supports booting. Only a few of the Macintosh- compatible adapters currently support booting from an eSATA drive, though that situation could change in the future.
The main reason you can't boot from eSATA is because you basically can't boot from a device attached through the express card slot. This would be the case with a firewire or USB drive connected through the express slot as well. It's basically not seen as a bootable port. You can get an eSATA ExpressCard adapter. eSATA is faster than FW800, but not much faster in 'real-world' use. I'd recommend going with a FW800 (if you have FW800 Port) or FW400 drive. Format the drive using the GUID partition scheme, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting for the partition you want to boot from. Or if your iMac is older PPC The bootable partition Map for PPC is (APM) "Apple Partition Map" which is Apples default. Ask Roger for more details on the External Drive.
