While there are menu commands for this, you can use option-shift-command-C on highlighted test to copy the character style, or use option-command-C to copy the format of the current paragraph. In either case, option-command-V applies the style you just copied. A much more flexible and powerful method, though, is to use the Styles Drawer (View > Show Styles Drawer) which allows you to create and reuse styles on the fly. The styles remain specific to the current document, but can be reused in other documents by importing them.
