Handbrake wants to convert the entire VOB or DVD into an MPEG or whatever format you need - this might be what you want. I use QuickTime (or even iMovie) to then edit down to the part I want. Usually when I'm using DVDxDV it is because I want a 5 minute clip from a DVD.
