Hi Wendy, I just press and hold the top button until the red slide appears, 
then it does take about a full minute to turn itself off.

But, you shouldn't be having such problems from the start, and it may be faulty.

I suggest connecting it to iTunes and doing a full restore, then just try using 
it with the basic setup. If you are still unable to use it, then it may have to 
be replaced.
