Peter, Just directly copied a CD containing photo data with no problems. The original CD was a Hybrid CD-ROM with one TAO session on it. Used Toast 10.0.8 writing with HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH61N burner in a MacPro5,1 under MacOS 10.6.5. Burn speed 4X. Burnt onto unknown CD medium given to me by a friend.
For your problem, check the following: 1 Use System Profiler to check if your writer is capable of writing to a DVD. 2 If it is not able to write to a DVD then make sure you are burning to a CD and not accidentally to a DVD. 3 Use Toast's Recorder/ Disk info… menu item to check your recording medium type before starting the copying process. Note that burners that can write to both CDs and DVDs have two separate lasers, one for CDs, and a different one for DVDs. I have come across situations where one of the lasers has died, so the owner claims something like 'the drive works with DVDs so why won't it burn CDs'. Obviously, only the CD laser has died. Time for a new burner. Happened to me a few months ago. New burner installed; no problems since. Cheapest good make burner came from the USA.
