Agree with that but this is a special bit of gear that "knows what it
wants". They are not made anymore ( 25 years old). Keyspan was set-
up and the machine ( a peptide synthesizer for those beginning to
wonder!) would not play ball.

Hi Bill,
I think that not all Serial to USB adaptors are created equal!
I have not used it for a while but I certainly used a Keyspan one
with my GPS and it worked just fine – I seem to remember though that
some of the cheap ones did not have OSX drivers and some chipsets
were reported to give problems – so (unless you are into doing all
the hard work yourself) I would stick to those with a proven track
record with OSX (like the Keyspan ones).
Of course, if the only use for the machine is to interface with the
lab equipment, then using an older machine with an in-built serial
port does keep things simpler.

Thansk Reg. I'll have a play with batteries and the like first.
To those who recommended the Serial to USB - it came back to me.
The machine went into catatonic something and we quickly abandoned
that one.

Bill if all is not good, I have a 7500/100 under the bed you can
use. It hasn't been started in a couple of years though but you're
welcome to it.
The person who gave it to me told me it had a G3 card in it, but
I've never checked!

Hi Kevin
I have tried USA and UK to get a new PRAM battery. ( listed
around $25 AUD) No luck. The next suggested solution is
another machine. The issue is that the lab equipment we use
runs via a serial port . So any machine compatible and with
OS9 with serial porting would do. Or is there a way of going
from a serial port to USB? I'd need to pull the HD from the
old 7220 of course. Can you help there?

If I remember correctly, the PRAM battery for that machine is
a square, quite expensive one. In the distant past I have
made up a battery with three AAA cells rewired to the
original wire. Alternatively you should be able to get an
early iMac which will run sweetly on OS 9.

Hi Bill,
I had one of those machines and I found that if the PRAM
battery died the machine would not start, so its worth
putting in a new one to be sure.

Folks,
I have an ancient 7220/200 attached to a bit lab equipment at UWA.
It's "dead". We think this might have had something to do with a
power surge then outage over Xmas.
We could change to a more recent machine, but it must be capable of
running OS9.
Could this be a dead PRAM battery? If co, any ideas on where to
get one appreciated.
Bill
