Hi Clive,

David has pretty much captured it. As an alternative strategy though, if you 
want to insulates yourself from the ISP provided email account, simply set-up a 
gmail (hotmail, yahoo mail) account and use that exclusively. The iPhone setup 
for a gmail account is incredibly simple because the defaults (port numbers, 
SSL protocol, email server address) are all programmed in to the setup utility 
and they don't have to be reentered. You can then forward your ISP provided 
email account to your gmail account. The benefits of this approach are that you 
can change ISP on a whim without having to email everyone in your address book 
to inform them of an email address change. You can also set up multiple gmail 
accounts for various purposes with very little effort. I have one account for 
my subscriptions to newsgroups, for instance.

The downside is, of course, that the google-plex gets to see all your email. :-(
