Gary,

VueScan, the superior scanning software from <http://www.hamrick.com> will
drive the Brother MFC-6490CN and the MFC-6490CW scanners. I assume you were
looking at one of these models. VueScan is available in a 64-bit version if
your Mac can handle that, or 32-bit version for less capable Macs.

If you just press the default buttons VueScan does an excellent standard job.
I've been using Vuescan for more than 10 years with a big variety of Macs and
Scanners with great results. In several combinations the official driver for
the scanner no longer worked with the more up-to-date Mac and MacOS I was
using. In one or two cases there was only a Windows official driver. VueScan
came to the rescue every time.

VueScan, together with a reasonable colour-calibrated scanner, has saved me
many hundreds that I used to spend on having material drum scanned.

If you get VueScan then I strongly recommend you buy the Pro version (US$79.95)
as you get lifetime upgrades, besides such extras as the ability to colour
calibrate your scanner. About every fortnight VueScan has a new version, so
lifetime upgrades are a good idea. Don't panic, I only upgrade about once a
quarter.

Vuescan has endless bells and whistles, similar to PhotoShop. You have a steep
learning curve if you want to use all of its features, but the first
substantial VueScan manual will reduce that.
