Many thanks for this Ronni, and to Daniel too. Use wisely and with
caution, and backup, seems to be the mantra

Has anyone any comment on CleanMyMac (macpaw.com)? Big ad in
latest MacFormat.
Looks good and favourable reviews but I am always very suspicious
of such programs after a bad experience with an early version of
Spring Cleaning.
If I could use it with a clear mind I might be tempted; I am
always finding debris to remove from the oddest locations.

Hi Severin,
I have used CleanMyMac successfully for years and I have posted to
WAMUG about it back in 2009.
I found this one post of mine to WAMUG on 17 Sept. 2009 Re: Clean
my Mac:
Using any Application similar to "CleanMyMac" you need to
understand what it does, know what you are doing, and what damage it
can do if used incorrectly!
There is a new version CleanMyMac 1.9.5 for Snow Leopard.
1. First thing to do is download the Manual and read it: <http://dl.macpaw.com/manuals/CleanMyMacUserGuide.pdf
>
2. Read the Frequently Asked Questions: <http://macpaw.com/faq> &
Forum: <http://forum.macpaw.com/index.php>
3. Set CleanMyMac's Preferences before you use it.
My Preferences are set at:
I DON'T check (tick) System Caches (Privileged)
I DON'T check (tick) System Logs (Privileged)
I DON'T check (tick) Universal Binaries
I DON'T check (tick) Overwrite files several times
I DON'T check (tick) Share your ignore list with other CleanMyMac
users
Under Languages to keep:
I have 2 English Languages checked (ticked) .... You might want to
keep more languages on your computer.
Under Scan:
I DON'T check (tick) Universal Binaries
I DON'T check (tick) Applications (I use AppZapper to remove any
Apps I no longer require) You might wish to use CleanMyMac to remove
unwanted apps.
I DON'T check (tick) Quick Erase ( I prefer to drag any file to the
trash and empty the trash) You might wish to use CleanMyMac to
remove unwanted files.
4. Purchase and Activate CleanMyMac if you are going to use it.
I don't think there is much more information I can give you. You
need to take care when using applications like this, know what you
are removing before you remove it.
I have used CleanMyMac for quite some time and have never had a
problem with it.
But I take no responsibility.
Cheers,
Ronni
