Sorry Severin,

I misunderstood your email ;-) TextEdit also opens with a blank page, it is how 
the programs are designed & is in compliance with Apple's OS X guidelines for 
software of its type.

There is a AppleScript here that open’s Word 2008 for Mac and then closes the 
automatically spawned blank document.
