Yes I also found Freehand had issues with late versions of SL.
But, there is a solution in the vein of Illustrator.
It does import Freehand files, and a lot of Freehand idiosyncrasies have been 
transferred also.

Cross-grades are available.

Wonderful tutorials to assist in migration.
