This is to alert anyone planning to upgrade a MacBook Pro to a possible
side-effect and its solution.

I recently put extra memory and a bigger hard disk in a:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz

seemingly without any problems, but with the wisdom of hindsight I now realise
that this Mac stopped giving a start-up sound whenever booted after the upgrade.

After about three weeks the machine started intermittently losing its keyboard
and touchpad ability. During such events its owner had to resort to an external
keyboard and mouse to regain control.

I suspected the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard may
have been the culprit, because you have to disturb that cable while getting
inside a MacBook Pro. So, reopened the machine and re-taped the suspect cable.
Curses; stll intermittent loss of keyboard and touchpad.

After further head-scratching suddenly thought the problem may be a software
one, so reset the PRAM, not expecting much. Voila; the start-up boing is back
and no problems for several days. I hope I'm not celebrating prematurely.

I relate this in case you have a similar machine and plan to give it a birthday
one day. As soon as you have done so, reset the PRAM (hold Command-Option-'P'
key-'R'Key combination during startup till you hear at least two startup
chimes) to save yourself lots of head-scratching.
