Hi Bill, I would think you had caused some corruption in Finder. When you are unable to open any files or folders in Finder, often moving the com.apple.finder.plist file found in (your user)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop then, Relaunch your Finder. -->Force Quit-->Finder-->Relaunch fixes the problem.
But, keeping your desktop clean is the best solution.
