Hi Peter, If you rub (put slight pressure) on your screen with the cleaning cloth that came with the MBP do they disappear? Has the MBP had a knock or a drop?
Vertical lines appearing are related to the screen or the GPU or maybe even simply a faulty ribbon cable. You would need to get a Technician to look at it if it persists as you might need the LCD Panel replaced. But being a 2007 machine, the cost of screen replacement might induce you to upgrade to a new MBP.
